HIFF INTERVIEW: Ben Barenholtz on his World Premiere documentary WAKALIWOOD: THE DOCUMENTARY

We were excited to have a chance to speak with HIFF 2010 Industry Toastee Ben Barenholtz about his new documentary WAKALIWOOD: THE DOCUMENTARY, which is having its World Premiere at the 20th Anniversary Festival on Fri, Oct 05, 4:30PM at Sag Harbor Cinema. The film will also screen Sun, Oct 07, 8:45PM UA East Hampton Theater 3.Click Here to purchase tickets.

As a key figure in the Independent Cinema landscape, from producing the Coen brothers films, distributing progressive and edgy films through Libra Films and Circle Releasing, and exhibiting classic and underground films by Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol, Maya Deren, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Buster Keaton and D.W. Griffith at the Elgin Cinema in the late 60′s, how did you find yourself making a film in Uganda?

Given my record, don’t you think it was natural for me to go to Uganda or any other place that can provoke my interest. The choices I have made have always been unpredictable. I was sitting in the the car going to the airport asking myself, “What the hell are you doing at your age? Go home idiot.” But on this trip I managed to reacquaint myself with the reasons I got involved in film to begin with and to realize that I will never retire or be satisfied with past accomplishments or even write a book.

You co-directed Wakaliwood: The Documentary with Alan Hofmanis, is this both of yours directorial debut? What made you want to sit behind the director’s chair at this point in your career?

I directed my first documentary a few years ago called “Music Inn” for which we are still trying to raise the money to clear the music rights.

I never sat in a directors chair.

You’ve been in the industry for almost 50 years, yet you’re still experimenting, creating and utilizing new media to great effect. In fact, you’ve created a Kickstarter campaign for the documentary to help raise finishing funds for the film. What are your thoughts on the changing landscape of producing and distributing films? Are these new platforms exciting to you or do you yearn for the old days?

We started our Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to promote and market the film and to pay off the post production costs. I only yearn for the future, unpredictable, changing landscapes, and distribution methods yet to be developed. I don’t think anyone really knows what will happen next and I can tell you with certainty that I don’t know what I am going to do next.

DON’T MISS HIFF’s upcoming ROWDY TALK on Saturday, October 6th at 10:00am at Rowdy Hall. Filmmakers who have used the crowd-sourcing platform to fund their films share how best to utilize this new concept. Guests will also discuss the impact the company has had in the film industry in the past two years and what we should expect for the future. Admission is first come, first served.

HIFF Reveals Opening, Closing and Centerpiece Films (#HIFF12)

Post sponsored by PointBurst

The 20th Hamptons International Film Festival (@HamptonsFilm, #HIFF12) is proud to announce that Love, Marilyn will have it’s U.S. Premiere as the Opening Night film at Guild Hall (@GuildHall) in East Hampton on Thursday, October 4th. Director Liz Garbus’ documentary feature is a startlingly intimate and revealing portrait of arguably the most famous female actor ever to grace the silver screen.

The Friday night Southampton opening is David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook. After a court-ordered stint at a psychiatric facility, Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper), who is bipolar, moves back in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jackie Weaver) and tries to win back his estranged wife Nikki. Into his orbit flies Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), an equally volatile young widow who offers to help Pat get Nikki back…at a price. The film will be released by The Weinstein Company on November 21st.

Ben Affleck’s Argo will be the Centerpiece of the festival. Affleck directs and plays Tony Mendez, a CIA agent and “exfiltration” expert who devised a daring, unconventional plan to rescue six Americans hiding in the Canadian Embassy in Tehran during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Warner Brothers will release the film nationally on October 12th.

David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, makes his feature film directorial debut with Paramount Vantage‘s Not Fade Away, which will close this year’s festival. The film is about a moment in time in the early 1960s when the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the suburbs of New Jersey decide to form a rock band. The film reunites Chase with Sopranos star James Gandolfini. Paramount Pictures will release the film on December 21st.

“These films, with their range of styles and risk-taking creative choices, represent the pinnacle of what the festival has endeavored to achieve for the last 20 years. The Oscar and Emmy recognition that each of these four filmmakers have already received is a testament to their vital creative force. I can’t wait to share their distinct visions with our audiences in the Hamptons,” says David Nugent, HIFF Director of Programming.

Ann Roth To Receive HIFF's Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Costume Design

Post sponsored by PointBurst

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (@theacademy) will co-present a special evening honoring the career of costume designer Ann Roth during The 20th Hamptons International Film Festival (@HamptonsFilm). Special guests include Ann Roth, Nathan Lane and Mike Nichols with CNN (@CNN) correspondent Alina Cho serving as host and moderator. The celebration will take place at Guild Hall (@GuildHall) in East Hampton on Saturday, October 6th where Ms. Roth will receive The Hamptons International Film Festival’s Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement in Costume Design.

With six decades in the film industry and over 100 film credits to her name, legendary costume designer Ann Roth has earned numerous accolades for her diverse career, including an Oscar® for The English Patient (1996). Well-known for the depth of her creative vision and her rigorous attention to detail, Roth has designed costumes for a wide variety of genres and historical periods, with films as varied as The Day of the Locust  (1975), Hair (1979), The World According to Garp (1982), The Birdcage (1996), The Hours (2002) and Julie & Julia (2009).

Roth is noted for her ability to collaborate with actors and directors in creating indelible characters, and has worked repeatedly with such artists as Mike Nichols, Stephen Daldry, Anthony Minghella, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman and Daniel Day-Lewis. In addition to her four Academy Award nominations, Roth has received four Tony Award® nominations for her costume designs for the stage (most recently, for her work on The Book of Mormon (@BookofMormonBWY)) and three Emmy Award® (@PrimeTimeEmmys) nominations (including her work on the miniseries Mildred Pierce). This special event will be both a celebration of Roth’s career and an examination of her work and craft, featuring film clips and in-depth discussions of her creative process.

“Ann’s work has helped bring some of our most iconic movie characters to life,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “She’s a beloved artist whose work continues to inspire all of us.”

“We are honored that in our festival’s anniversary year we are able to recognize and salute such an extraordinary woman as Ann Roth,” said Executive Director Karen Arikian. “She epitomizes the inspirational creative talent that we have endeavored to present to our audiences at HIFF for the last 20 years.”

“It is, of course, a tremendous honor to be recognized for one’s work by one’s peers” said Ann Roth. “I gratefully thank both The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences and The Hamptons International Film Festival and I commend the festival on its steely optimism in waiting until 2012 to bestow such an honor on me.”

In celebration of Ms. Roth’s career, a selection of her original sketches and renderings will be exhibited during the week of the festival. The exhibition will feature hand-drawn works created and curated by Ms. Roth.
